East City · Cape Town

The neighbourhood
most Cape Town locals
haven't discovered yet.

62 Roeland Street sits in the heart of East City -- a pocket of Cape Town that's been quietly transforming for two decades. Coffee, food, culture and history, all within a five-minute walk.

East City neighbourhood, Cape Town

A hidden gem in plain sight

East City is one of those Cape Town neighbourhoods that people who live here know about and everyone else doesn't. That's changing fast -- but for now, it's still the kind of place where you can get a genuinely good coffee, a proper lunch, and a table without a reservation.

The area spent most of the 90s in decline. The regeneration started in the early 2000s and has been building steadily since. Cape Town Office opened on Roeland Street in 2011 -- early enough that we've watched the neighbourhood transform in real time.

One person deserves particular credit for what East City became: the late Steven Harris, widely known as the Mayor of the East City. His passion and relentless advocacy shaped the area's identity and played a central role in Cape Town's designation as the World Design Capital in 2014 -- with East City at the heart of it.

Today, Harrington Street and Roeland Street form the spine of a neighbourhood that's become one of the best places to work, eat and drink in the city. We're biased, obviously. But we've been here long enough to mean it.

Where we go when we leave the desk

Tried and tested. These are the places CTO members actually use -- for coffee before work, lunch between meetings, and the occasional after-work wind-down.

Our closest and most-visited coffee stop. Serious about their beans, relaxed about everything else. The go-to for a quick flat white between calls.

Truth Coffee Roasting

Named by the Daily Telegraph as the world's best coffee shop. Worth the slightly longer walk, especially on a clear morning when you can sit outside.

Exactly what it sounds like. Proper bagels, good fillings, reliable and fast. A CTO member staple for the pre-work or mid-morning fuel stop.

Mexican street food done properly. Tacos, burritos, good hot sauce. The CTO lunch club ends up here more often than anywhere else on Harrington Street.

Wild Eatery

Plant-forward, seasonal menu that changes regularly. Good for a proper sit-down lunch when you want something a bit more considered than a quick bite.

Freshly baked pita from imported Lebanese ovens, handmade mezze and dips. Consistently good, consistently affordable. A neighbourhood institution.
