What's the difference between coworking, shared office space and serviced offices?

The short answer: not much. These terms all describe broadly the same thing -- a professionally equipped workspace that individuals, freelancers, remote workers and small teams can use without signing a long-term lease.

The term coworking (one word) is the globally accepted term for shared workspace used by people from different companies, working alongside each other. It was formally recognised as distinct from "co-working" (hyphenated), which refers to colleagues working together within the same organisation.

In practice, most people use whichever term feels natural. If you're looking for any of the following in Cape Town, you're in the right place:

Coworking space
Shared workspace for independent workers and small teams from different companies
Shared office space
A professional office environment shared with other businesses
Hot desking
Flexible desk access on an as-needed basis -- no fixed seat
Serviced office
A fully equipped office with internet, meeting rooms and support included
Flexible office space
Office access without a long-term lease commitment
Short-term office rental
Office space available by the day, week, month or project duration

What Cape Town Office offers

Cape Town Office is Cape Town's original coworking space, open since 2011 at 62 Roeland Street in the East City district. We offer several options depending on how you work:

Flexi / Hybrid membership
Hour-based access. Buy a block of hours and use them at your own pace within 60 days. From R2,530 incl. VAT. The flexible office equivalent of pay-as-you-go -- ideal for people who don't need to be in an office every day.
Dedicated desk
Your own permanent desk in the space, available 24/7. No hour-counting. From R4,500 incl. VAT per month. The closest equivalent to a traditional office, without the lease.
Team space
A dedicated pod for small teams and project crews. Month-to-month, no minimum term. Ideal for startups, hybrid teams and short-term project crews including film and TV production.
Day pass
Full access to the space for R495 incl. VAT. Walk-ins welcome, Monday to Friday. The R495 is credited in full against any membership if you decide to join.

What's included in all options

All memberships and day passes include 500Mbps fibre (WiFi and Ethernet), meeting rooms, podcast studio, phone booths, loadshedding backup, bottomless coffee and tea, showers, and 24/7 access (members). No hidden extras.

We're at 62 Roeland Street, 3rd floor, Gardens, Cape Town -- in the East City district, well positioned for the M3, N1 and N2. Free street parking available nearby.

Why Cape Town Office?

We've been doing this since 2011 -- longer than any other coworking space in Cape Town. In 2016, Forbes named us one of the Top 10 Best Coworking Spaces on Earth, based on community engagement rather than aesthetics. In 2024, Cape Town Tourism recognised us as the Best Coworking Space in Cape Town.

We have a 5-star rating on Google with over 140 reviews. We're not the biggest space in Cape Town and we're not trying to be. We're the one with the best community -- and we've been proving it for fifteen years.
