Where Roeland Meets Harrington

← All posts

Cape Town is no stranger to dynamic urban shifts, and nowhere is this more evident than in the rise of Harrington Street as the city's must-visit hub. Culture, creativity, and convenience -- this pocket of the city has become the go-to destination.

62 Roeland

What to call the area surrounding Harrington Street is often debated -- some say it's part of District Six, some say Gardens, others firmly place it in the East City. Technically, Harrington Street falls within the East City district, but not by a lot. You're talking one street away in reality. Whatever you call it though, you can't deny this area has undergone a massive transformation.

The East City had sadly fallen into a state of disrepair and decline back in the 90s, and it wasn't until the early 2000s that we started to see the first sparks of energy and rejuvenation. Back then, it wasn't the most desirable area to shop, eat, live or work in. And as we know, change -- however much needed -- is never easy, so re-imagining the area and what it could be was a long and sustained community effort.

One person I feel should be largely credited for his relentless passion, drive and energy is the late Steven Harris, fondly known as the "Mayor of the East City." His vision and dedication played a crucial role in shaping the East City into the thriving hub it is today.

The East City, because of Steven, was at the heart of Cape Town's designation as the World Design Capital in 2014 -- a title that solidified the East City as the centre for innovation and urban regeneration in Cape Town.

Roeland to everywhere in Cape Town

One of the biggest advantages of this location? Accessibility. Whether North via the N1 or to Cape Town International Airport via the N2, 62 Roeland is ideally positioned. Southern Suburbs via the M3 is easy, but avoid peak times if you can as the traffic can get intense.

Parking -- in Cape Town, that old chestnut

Unlike much of the rest of the city, you can still park for free on upper Harrington and Canterbury Street. There are paid options too. Harrington Square provides 150 parking bays at R5 per hour with a daily maximum of R30 -- about a 6-minute walk from the office. Park and grab a coffee on the way up.

Work, play, coffee and eat in the East City

Cape Town Office is in a prime position to take full advantage of what this district has to offer. Some of the city's best bars, restaurants, and music venues -- from Surfarosa to The Electric to Tommy's Chop Shop -- are within minutes of the office. We've listed our favourites, tried and tested, on our East City page.

We've seen the East City transform in real-time over the past 14 years, in the best way. 62 Roeland is more than just an address -- you're in the heart of the East City.
