That story stuck with me, not because it's unusual, but because it's exactly the kind of thing you can't see on a price list. If you're comparing day rates across Cape Town's coworking spaces right now, here's what's actually worth checking, wherever you end up booking.
Will someone actually be there
A day pass is only worth the number on it if you can get in. Ask what the check-in process actually looks like, whether it's staffed reception hours or a self-service arrangement, and what happens if something goes wrong on the day. It's a fair question to ask any space before you pay upfront, and a space that's confident in its answer will tell you plainly.
This example may be a little extreme, but the stuff you simply assume will be fine on the day is often overlooked. Check the reviews, both Google and Coworker.com are worth a look for balance, and pay attention to what people say about the facilities and the experience around them, not just the price.
What you'll actually be sitting on
Working from a shared communal bench, or a cafe-style chair, for an hour is fine. Working from that for six to eight hours is a different story, especially if it's the same seating a cafe uses for its lunch crowd. A proper ergonomic chair built for a full working day matters more than it sounds like it should, and it's rarely mentioned upfront.
What's included, and what costs extra once you're in
Meeting rooms and phone booths are the two things people almost never ask about before they book, and almost always need within the first few hours. It's worth knowing upfront whether those are included or a separate charge you'll discover mid-visit.
Worth asking too: are your guests included in your day pass, or do you need to pay for that? At CTO, a guest joining you for a coffee or a meeting is never charged. If they end up working from the space for the day themselves, that's a different story, they'd need their own day pass.
Whether there's anywhere to actually record something properly
This one's specific to us, so take it as one data point rather than a general rule: every CTO day pass includes an hour in our podcast studio, RØDECaster Pro, RØDE microphones, proper acoustic treatment. It's not just for podcasters. We've had day pass visitors use it for client calls, interviews, and recorded presentations, anywhere sound quality actually matters and a phone booth won't cut it. It's a genuinely unusual thing to find on a day pass anywhere in the city.
Whether the internet holds up, and what happens when it doesn't
Wifi speed gets all the attention on a rate comparison, but mostly it's a blanket label, "it's fast," and that's only half the story. The kind of wifi matters just as much as the raw speed. This mostly matters if your work has larger than normal bandwidth needs, film editors and video or graphic creators in particular, since for them upload speed matters far more than download. That's actually why we put dedicated LAN points at every desk during our 2017/18 renovation, we'd learned the hard way over a few years that even fibre-backed wifi can be unstable, and we didn't fully appreciate how much a wired option would matter until we saw it in daily use. We've had plenty of day pass visitors come in specifically for the wired connection, to meet a deadline or send a large batch of files to a client, gigabytes of footage in one recent case. It took a few hours, but it ran smoothly the whole way through. The same job on shared wifi somewhere else could have been a very different experience, and not one you'd want to be relying on with a deadline attached.
Check the reviews for wifi experience specifically, it matters more than the headline speed number suggests.

The short version
A rate comparison is a reasonable place to start, but it only tells you the price of one day. It won't tell you if there's someone to let you in, what you're sitting on for eight hours, whether the meeting room you need for a client call is included, or whether the internet holds up once the room fills up. Ask those questions of any space before you book, not just ours. It's a better use of the time than comparing numbers alone.
