Apologies for the gap in posts, but it’s been heeeeeectic this side.

We’re in the process of developing a 2nd space for CTO now and I’d like to open the floor to anyone out there and get your views.

What do you look for in a shared office space?

Is it…

  • Atmosphere
  • Space
  • Functionality (board room / receptionist)
  • Location
  • Networking opportunities
  • Privacy
  • Quiet surrounds
  • Creative & inspiring surrounds
  • Low cost

Really keen to hear what you guys think and taking some of your suggestions forward in the design of our new space.

Hope you have a fantastic week!

Heyo Lizelle,

The freelance translator has a lonely lonely job. From their perspective the social aspect is important. Celine from nakedtanslations.com just told me yesterday that she started working at jellies …

So there’s a market!

• Flexible lease agreement / month-to-month / no scary contracts

The sole reason I chose CTO was the last point. I found amazing and creative spaces, but signing personal surety for a year’s lease is something that is scary, especially for a small startup. Our office in JHB was hellishly expensive but we were happy there because we could cancel with a month’s notice – 2 way street (lessor and lessee).

Flexible working space (quiet/social/meeting room) which is bright, air conditioned, and full of positive energy.

Hi Lizelle,

Affordability, Meeting rooms (boadroom), atmosphere, networking, flexibility. On the functionality part, it is always great to have common access infrastructure like printers/scanners/fax. Centralises everything for a start-up using the space for a temporary basis and also helps for one not to purchase office equipment when things are still uncertain.

What I’m looking for: a comfortable work space with ample, safe parking. A meeting room would be good. Nice bathroom and kitchen space. Somewhere you’d be happy to bring a client.

The social side of things isn’t that important to me. Neither is the “creativeness” of the space. Although you want an office you look forward to going to every day.

Drawbacks to CTO that I’ve experienced – parking can be a challenge. Because I’m under the window my desk is perpetually covered in dirt. I’m either being blown away by the wind, or sweating into my keyboard…

Good luck with phase 2!
